A
Class Catamaran Racing - UK's National Champion for the last
three years: Chris Field.
The
Marine Travel Company are delighted to support Chris in his
goal to succeed at both the European and World Championships
in the coming years. Ultimately his long term goal is to
represent
GB at the 2012 London Olympics, but that will depend on the
Olympic committee reversing their earlier decision and bringing
the sport back into the Olympics.

The
Boat
The
A-Class catamaran is the fastest, most demanding and spectacular
singlehanded cataraman in the world, purely designed for
racing. The boat is 18' long and is 7,6" wide and has
a mast of over 30' and with the construction being entirely
of carbon fibre, the power to weight ration is such that
the boat will achieve speeds in excess of 25 knots. With
over 100 boats competing at world level events, it is truly
an amazing sight to watch.
The
Racing
The
A-Class is an international class with competitions held
throughout the UK and the rest of the world, limited to 100
boats for each event. Most competitions require qualification
and an event is usually a three to seven day series with
three races held each day. Each race lasts one hour and a
total of the overall results determines the winner. Therefore,
consistency, highly competent boat handling and technical
skills, determination and clever tactical thinking is needed
to simply compete at world level regattas, let alone win!
The
Man
Chris
has been racing catamarans since the age of 8, by the age
of 12 he had already become the national champion in the
'Prindle 18-2' class with his father. Every weekend for the
past 12 years Chris travels to various sailing events all
over Europe, pitting himself against sailors from all nations.
Chris has raced many classes of boat, up to the highest level,
not only winning the overall British Olympic Class title
in 2004, but has also qualified for the European and World
Championships for the last two years by becoming our national
champion in 2005, 2006 and now 2007.
